The Mystery Week on Goodreads ended yesterday (or earlier today, I’m not sure anymore). And my Mystery Week ends today, with this post about The Cheerleaders by Kara Thomas.
I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to squeeze in one more mystery novel before my self-imposed deadline because Sadie was still looming over my head (even though I’ve already read another book after that) and it was just too heavy. But hey, I managed. Next week, though (and maybe the week after that as well), is all about romance and happy endings and teenage love stories.
Anyway, I decided to go for another Young Adult Mystery book since that seemed lighter and easier to read. And, well, I wasn’t wrong.
Now the faculty and students at Sunnybrook High want to remember the lost cheerleaders. But for Monica, it’s not that easy. She just wants to forget. Only, Monica’s world is starting to unravel. There are the letters in her stepdad’s desk, an unearthed, years-old cell phone, a strange new friend at school. . . . Whatever happened five years ago isn’t over. Some people in town know more than they’re saying. And somehow Monica is at the center of it all.
There are no more cheerleaders in Sunnybrook, but that doesn’t mean anyone else is safe.
This book reminded me of Pretty Little Liars (the show, not the book), what with all the lying and the secrets and the privileged town they all lived in.
It started off pretty easy, introducing the characters and the tragedy that happened five years prior. Then we get to the mystery part—Monica, the protagonist, trying to figure out what really happened to the cheerleaders who died back then.
The truth was not easy to figure out, I’ll give this that. I had no clue until it was right there. But when the reveal happens, it was so anticlimactic, I practically just brushed through it and my mind was like blah blah blah meh blah meh.
Basically, this book wasn’t anything special and I could have lived with having not read it at all. It was a good change of pace, though, from the heaviness of Sadie so there’s that, at least.
My Mystery Week Book #7: The Cheerleaders by Kara Thomas. (Not sure if I can actually manage to post a book review for the rest of the week but here’s to hoping.) ‼️Hey, I managed to post a review seven days straight!
The Mystery Week on Goodreads has ended. And I’m so glad I did my own version of Mystery Week. Hopefully, I get to have enough energy and brain cells to do another themed book week again.
